Aylin’s Story
We met Aylin during a visit to her school on the east end of the island. When Michael walked up to her sitting at her desk, she immediately pointed to his hearing aid and that is when Michael noticed how her left ear structure was similar to his when he was a baby.
“Look, we have the same ear!” he told her. That was when Michael noticed some signs of Aylin’s hearing challenges; the way she leaned in with her good ear and a somewhat baffled expression.
For the short time visiting, Michael could not shake the feeling that Aylin struggled in the classroom. Back at the retreat, Michael realized Aylin needed intervention. She was at the age in which communication and education are so crucial to thriving in life and there were two distinct paths in front of her.
Being blessed and privileged to be born within a support system with his own hearing and speech challenges, it is unfair and cruel that not every child has that same access.Through collaboration and connections, Michael is determined to ensure Aylin walks the path that enables her to thrive.
